OPGI Customer Car Feature: Shane Schieve’s ’70 Monte Carlo

Long before he was an OPGI customer, Shane Schieve fell in love with his uncle’s 1970 Monte Carlo. “When my uncle pulled up in this car in ’76 I was 4 years old and thought it was the coolest car I’ve ever seen and I knew it would be mine.”

Just two years later that dream felt so far out of reach when Shane’s uncle traded in that Monte. Knowing his son’s attachment to the car, Shane’s father drove down to the dealership to make an offer that was ultimately shot down. Six-year-old Shane not understanding why his Dad didn’t just pay what the dealership wanted, cried the entire drive home.

Shane’s Dad being a mechanic knew what was wrong with the car and knowing it’s worth expected to hear back from the dealership. Sure enough, a week later he got that call, the dealership would accept his offer.

Fast forward 11 years, Shane was finally behind the wheel of his dream car, and after graduating high school in 1990 became the owner of the Monte Carlo he knew would be his one day. By ’93 before Shane had the means to properly maintain a classic, he was forced to park the Monte Carlo and so she sat.

Forty-plus years after love at first sight, with the help of mechanic Jason Smiley of Smiley’s Automotive, Shane’s Monte Carlo is now a fully restored daily driver.
