Celebrating Collector Cars – National Collector Car Appreciation Day

The U.S. Senate working in conjunction with the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) councils, have announced that the U.S. Senate has passed Senate Resolution 493 (S. Res. 493) designating July 11, 2014 as the fifth consecutive “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The date marks the commemoration of a relatively new nationwide event designed to raise awareness of the important role automotive restoration and collector cars play in American society today.

Senate Resolution 493 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus Co-Chairs Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), along with Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK). The Senators, who have long been advocates for the automotive restoration and collector car hobby in Washington, formed the non-partisan member Caucus to emphasize the cultural importance of collector cars and to help pay tribute to America’s ongoing love of all things car and motorsports related.

SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs, Steve McDonald, said “We thank the U.S. Senate for its continued recognition of the collector car hobby as a valued American tradition and pastime. With Australia and Canada joining the celebration, Collector Car Appreciation Day has now become an international recognition of the collector car industry and the millions of hobbyists it supports.”

The Appreciation Day effort also acknowledges the automobile as the inspirational basis for much of the automobile-themed music, literature, photography, cinema, and fashion that has been produced in the U.S., as well as abroad. Since the first Collector Car Appreciation Day was recognized on July 9, 2010, many individual states and local governments have also adopted similar commemorative celebrations, and each year more events are being held to celebrate the automobile in American culture.

As a result, more businesses and car clubs will be hosting car shows and cruises to commemorate the special day this year. In the U.S, Australia and Canada, events ranging from informal garage gatherings and backyard barbeques to organized events, cruises and parades, will be held to support this growing annual automotive celebration. The SEMA organization reminds all automotive enthusiasts that they are encouraged to take part in this year’s celebration by attending a Collector Car Appreciation Day event in or near their own community this year.
