GM – Most Made in America Brand

Made In the USA

Although nearly every new car sold by the Detroit Big Three manufacturers currently utilize components from suppliers outside the United States, the American Automotive Labeling Act considers a motor vehicle with 75% or more of its components sourced from the United States or Canada as a domestic product. In case you were wondering which of the Big Three manufacturer’s cars might be the most “domestic” in parts content, we need only look at the Made in America Index compiled by the Kogod School of Business at American University in Washington D.C.

Chevelle Console Kit

Chevelle Console Kit, Turbo Hydra-Matic w/Shifter

The appearance and function of a classic Chevelle’s center console is an area of prime importance because the console is both highly visible and an essential control component at the same time. The center console is also one area of the interior that can look really great when restored to original specs. Chevelles with worn-out or damaged center consoles as well as those that came from the factory without center consoles at all, can both benefit from the installation of a complete new console assembly. OPGI Customer Car Spotlight: 1953 Cadillac

COLMAN 227346 007

Although most of the cars featured in our Customer Car Spotlight installments are usually from Southern California, this weeks’ customer car comes from a bit farther away, as this very nice 1953 Cadillac two-door hardtop belongs to Original Parts Group Inc., customer Lee Coleman of Phoenix, Arizona.

Although Lee’s Cadillac was treated to a complete, frame-off restoration, the car is a bit unusual in that it wasn’t just restored to original specifications, but instead restored and improved with some modern appointments to improve the driving experience beyond the level delivered back in 1953. In addition to the obvious restoration work, under the hood the original 331 cubic inch Cadillac powerplant was replaced with a fresh 2004 LS1 V-8 backed by a modern GM automatic transmission. Lee’s Caddy also received new power steering and power brakes along with a modern air conditioning system. When installing the new A/C system, Lee decided to add a custom radiator along with a freshly chrome plated radiator tank, fan housing and air conditioning compressor. A new alternator and all of the brackets and pulleys were chrome plated too.

One very visible modification on the exterior of the car is the addition of 17-inch wire wheels that somehow look appropriate despite their non-original factor. Lee also added a full air bag suspension system with a four link setup in the rear to bring the suspension up to the level of the enhanced performance found under the hood. New upholstery, headliner and door panels along with NOS tinted glass make the interior look better than it probably did in 1953. Of course, all of the exterior chrome pieces and bumpers were straightened and re-chromed prior to the final body and paint work.

When all of the work was completed, Lee hired an appraisal expert to help him determine a replacement value for insurance purposes. That appraisal came in right at $75,000 and the written evaluation stated that “The entire vehicle has been rebuilt from the ground up and the resulting product reflects great attention to detail and pride in workmanship.” We can only add that we completely agree with that appraisal.

OPGI Customer Car Spotlight: 1971 Buick Gran Sport

skylark frt 3-4

To say that we see a lot of nice cars here at the Original Parts Group Inc., headquarters in Seal Beach, California would be a bit of an understatement, as most of our local customers are in the process of restoring classic General Motors vehicles. We get to see many of those vehicles in different stages of completion when they are driven to our HQ to pick up new restoration parts. Obviously, many of those cars are unfinished, but every now and then one will arrive in 100% restored condition. The lime green Buick Gran Sport seen here is one of those totally restored cars.

OPGI Customer Bill Moore of Hawthorne, California is the proud owner of this ultra-clean 1971 Buick Gran Sport. Bill is a retired aircraft mechanic who says that although it took “two years and ten days” to complete the total body-off restoration of his Gran Sport, he really didn’t keep track of the cost of building the Buick because “it would hurt to know” how much it really cost him. Whatever it did cost, we’d have to say it was worth it.

Of course, it was a nice choice of car to begin with, as a 1971 Gran Sport with a Buick 455 V-8 under the hood is a great car to restore. The car also came fitted with Stage I heads and a beefier F41 suspension package as original factory options. When rebuilding the engine, Bill had the 455 bored .060 over to 468 cubic inches and added a larger Quadra-Jet carb along with a pointless distributor. He then backed it with a fresh Turbo Hydramatic 200-4R transmission to give the car an overdrive gear for freeway cruising.

All of the bodywork on the exterior of the Gran Sport was performed by Jeff Beck at Santini Paint & Body. The Lime Mist paint job was also applied at Santini’s shop. Bill also tasked Jeff Beck with restoring the interior and a new headliner, seat covers and door panels were installed at that time. Power door locks and a rear window defogger were also added for a bit of modern convenience. The completed car now looks and drives better than it did the day it rolled out of the factory, and as a member of the Gran Sport Club of America, Bill frequently enjoys driving it in the Southern California sunshine.
