A Monte Carlo SS: Enthusiasts Tell Their Stories

At Original Parts Group (OPGI), we’ve heard some fascinating stories behind classic car restorations. Today, we’re excited to share OPGI customer Abimel “Abbey” Castro’s journey with his 1987 Monte Carlo SS. From its early days as a daily driver to its transformation into an award-winning show car, let’s dive in.

Monte Carlo SS Origins: Abbey’s Journey Begins

Abbey purchased his Monte Carlo on April 16, 1987, from Rinke Chevrolet in Centerline, MI. Originally seeking a Grand National, he soon realized that finding one in or around Detroit was unlikely. So Abbey settled for a 1987 Monte Carlo SS, which he felt was the next best option. Despite not being his top choice, the Monte Carlo quickly became a cherished part of his family, serving as his wife’s daily driver and even teaching their two children how to drive.

Hiatus to Transformation: Reviving the Monte Carlo SS

From early ’95 to late ’99, Abbey’s Monte Carlo took a break while he worked in the Middle East. Upon his return, he found the car in need of serious attention, with the exhaust system deteriorating and other parts requiring maintenance. What started as a simple repair project soon turned into a full restoration, with friends helping strip the body from the frame for cleaning and painting.

Logistical Challenges: Relocating the Monte Carlo

Shortly after stripping the body, Abbey’s job relocated him to Texas, presenting a logistical challenge as the moving company refused to transport a disassembled vehicle. Undeterred, he rented a U-Haul truck and loaded it with the body, frame, and parts. Amidst the demands of his job, he reconstructed the car like Chevy did, with no assistance or readily available tutorials.

Upgrades and Enhancements: Elevating the Monte

Recently, Abbey has been upgrading several systems. He replaced the AC with all-new parts, installed electric Chrysler fans for a cooler ride, and enhanced the front with S-10 spindles and larger brakes. Additionally, he installed a Strange Engineering S-60 (Dana) rear end and added 2002 rear Camaro disk brakes for improved performance. Abbey also installed GM coolers from pick-n-pull to keep everything running smoothly.

Preserving Authenticity: Abbey’s Approach

While maintaining the stock interior, Abbey added a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the A-pillar, preserving the authenticity of the Monte Carlo. Recognizing OPGI restoration parts as ideal replacements, Abbey invested in numerous unseen parts and items. He further enhanced the car’s appearance with a Cowl Induction Air Cleaner setup and various other 70’s SS parts.

After years of dedication, Abbey completed the restoration in 2012, ensuring every detail reflected the original design. Since its restoration completion, Abbey’s Monte Carlo has secured numerous in-class trophies and several Best in Show titles at local car events.
