Chevrolet’s Small Plans

ChevySmallCars

It is no secret that General Motors (GM) recognizes the need to cultivate the next generation of automotive enthusiasts as covered previously in this blog (GM Works to Ensure the Future of Restoration), now the Chevrolet arm of the company is directly engaging those younger buyers with the launch of a new website focused on the three smallest cars it offers. The website is called ChevySmallCars.com, and it highlights the virtues of the Spark, Sonic and Trax subcompact cars while presenting them in a variety of content aimed at first-time buyers.

The ChevySmallCars site offers videos for each vehicle as well as web-episodes featuring the Sonic, Spark, and Trax produced by “Funny or Die” comedian Al Madrigal. The site also includes a feature called “Sonic Sessions,” consisting of various musical acts performing inside a Sonic (sounds cramped). Another feature is a quiz called “Find Your Smallmate” that attempts to match cars to visitors’ personalities based on their quiz answers. Chevy has plans to add more content throughout the year, including a “Car Customizer” that displays customization ideas, as well as custom podcasts and other content described as “A celebration of everything small.” Chevrolet is obviously hoping the new website will engage younger consumers and help them discover the brand’s smallest vehicles on their own terms.

Chevrolet’s director of cars and crossovers, Steve Majoros, said in a press release that ChevySmallCars.com is aimed at “a younger, more socially savvy buyer… and the new website is a great way to expose a portion of our portfolio that not everyone knows about.” Majoros added “Sonic, Spark and Trax customers are most likely to be first-time new automobile purchasers and typically are more likely to stick with the brand as their needs and way of life changes and they have to go up to a larger sedan or SUV.”

Whether or not GM will actually sell small cars in big numbers this year remains to be seen. Gas prices have been low and more people of all ages bought SUVs last year. Just last month the supplies of small cars on dealer lots were at their highest level in seven years and some manufacturers have begun discounting prices and improving lease deals in order to move their small cars. Time will tell whether sales of the Spark, Sonic and Trax improve for Chevy this year. In the meantime, the new website sounds like it will be quite entertaining, if only for the younger demographic.

Original Parts Group Inc. (OPGI), Customer Dick Eytchison of Cortez, Colorado is the proud owner of this 1965 Chevelle Malibu that he has restored and modified as a purpose-built autocross competition car. Born in Indiana and raised in California prior to moving to Colorado, Dick always had a passion for Chevrolet vehicles.

After restoring several classic Chevys (with parts from OPGI) over the years, Dick met John Hotchkis of Hotchkis Suspension fame in 1990 and a friendship developed. Dick quickly became very interested in Pro-Touring car setups and modified the suspension of his ‘65 Chevelle to improve the handling. One thing led to another, and ten years later in 2010 Dick and his Chevelle entered an autocross event at a Goodguys show in Del Mar, California.

By 2012 Dick was an accomplished autocrosser and was entering (and winning) events across the country. His current goal is to be able to move up into the Pro Class for the 2016 race season. Although the definition of the term “Pro-Touring” is evolving and open to interpretation, we’d say Dick Eytchison’s street-driven Chevelle that he races on the weekends definitely meets the spirit of the genre.

*Be sure to click on the video below to see Dick’s Chevelle in action at the Goodguys 16th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals last month where he took 2nd place in the Street Machine Class.

The Buick Nailhead

Nail-head-engine

Buick’s legendary V-8 engine from the mid-fifties to the mid-sixties is often called the “nailhead” motor due to its long, thin-stemmed valves with small diameter heads that resemble vertical rows of nails. The first Buick nailhead engines (debuting in 1953) had a 1.75″ intake and a 1.25″ exhaust valve, and even the later Wildcat 401 nailhead V-8s from the mid-sixties had valves that were much smaller than those used in Chevrolet engines at the time. However, the new Buick V-8 was light and compact overall and built with high quality forgings. Those qualities naturally attracted the attention of the hot rod crowd several years before the Chevy small block became available.

Buick’s nailhead V-8’s employed small-diameter intake runners to produce high torque since the small valves meant equally small and restrictive intake- and exhaust-port diameters. The nailheads also utilized camshafts with greater amounts of lift and duration than most powerplants of the day. The combination worked well enough though, and allowed the Buick engines to deliver more than one ft. lb. of torque per cubic inch of displacement. This is why Buick labeled and advertised their nailhead engines on their torque output, not the horsepower. The numbers resulted in some confusion though. For example, the Buick Wildcat 445 in the 1966 Skylark GS was actually a 401 cubic inch mill that developed 325 hp and a whopping 445 lb. ft. of torque. Buick’s focus on torque over maximum breathing at high rpm showed that the nailheads were designed to provide smooth, powerful acceleration to move big, heavy cars. High-rpm horsepower was obviously not the goal.

Although the nailhead’s valve orientation and head design allowed fairly decent-flowing intake ports, an extra bend in the exhaust ports made them quite restrictive, and Buick had to use very aggressive camshafts to make adequate power. The early nailheads boasted some of the most radical factory camshafts available at the time, and while the radical camshaft profiles did help air flow through the restrictive heads, they also delivered a somewhat lumpy idle compared to most other engines of the day.

That lumpy idle appealed to the hot rod crowd though, and for a few years before the Chevy small blocks and Chrysler hemi engines became widely available, the early nailhead Buicks powered many street rods, drag cars, road-race machines, and even Bonneville top-speed racers during the late ’50s. In 1967 a whole new generation of Buick V-8s with more conventional head designs appeared, and the nailhead was retired. Today, most nailheads are utilized on street rods or stock restorations due to the lasting appeal of their unique appearance and extreme low-end torque. Although it was eclipsed by later more free-flowing designs with more and larger valves, the venerable Buick nailhead has undeniably earned a well-deserved spot in GM powerplant history.
