The LeMans: A Luxury Pontiac

LeMans

Introduced in late 1961, the Lemans was the top-of-the-line model of the first-gen Tempest. This trim package included nicer interior and bucket seats. In 1964 the Tempest was redesigned to share the intermediate A-Body platform that shared use with other GM divisions, thus shedding its compact roots as well as the quirkier engine and driveline approaches. The LeMans remained the superior option for Tempests, Pontiac also offered a higher performance more stripped-down version called the “GTO”. The idea of a smaller platform vehicle with the biggest engine you could fit became a popular option for not only other divisions within GM, but also for Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors.

The El Camino Returns

El Camino

Chevy’s tentative jump into the “sedan/pickup” segment finally stuck with the return of the El Camino in 1964. First available in 1959 as a response to Ford’s Ranchero, it was based on the full-size B-body. After 1960 it was discontinued, while Ford shifted their Ranchero from full-size in 1959 to their new Falcon compact platform in 1960. Strong Ranchero sales in the US prompted Chevy to jump back on the bandwagon with the 1964 El Camino. For its first couple of years, Chevy marketed the El Camino as a light utility truck, and so did not make available any of the performance engines and packages found in Chevelles. Finally adding the 325 hp 396 ci big block option in 1966.

The Oldsmobile 4-4-2: W30 Option

The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 was produced between the 1964 and 1987 model years and became a model in its own right from 1968 to 1971. All standard 1968 4-4-2 engines were painted a bronze–copper color, the 1967s were topped with a fire-red air cleaner. The W-30 option (Oldsmobile’s big secret in hopes of finally outdoing the GTO) came equipped with a ram-air option package. It was a “Supercar” released in late ’66, and by 1967 the word was out about the muscle car, making its way to Navy Combat Pilot, Paul Killgo.

Becoming its Own: A 1978 Chevrolet Malibu

1978 Chevrolet Malibu

Becoming its own model in 1978, the Chevrolet Malibu began as a trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle. In addition to the nameplate change, the 1978 Malibu model was over a foot shorter, which cut down the vehicle’s weight by several hundred pounds. Another notable change for the new model was the chrome-plated plastic grille with ‘Chevrolet’ block lettering, both available at Original Parts Group.
