The Skylark: One Man’s Dream, Another Man’s Treasure

Skylark

When the Skylark received a major facelift to a more conventional style in 1963, sales skyrocketed and Buick sold over 42,000. In 1964 Buick increased the Skylark from a compact to the new GM intermediate A-body platform, with a wheelbase of 115 inches. A cast iron V6 replaced the aluminum 215ci V8, and more performance options like a manual four-speed started creeping into the Skylark. In 1964 the Gran Sport “GS” performance package was available on different Buick lines, including Skylark. Buick’s 401ci V8 packing 325hp came with the GS, plus badging to signify what you had. The LeMans: A Luxury Pontiac

LeMans

Introduced in late 1961, the Lemans was the top-of-the-line model of the first-gen Tempest. This trim package included nicer interior and bucket seats. In 1964 the Tempest was redesigned to share the intermediate A-Body platform that shared use with other GM divisions, thus shedding its compact roots as well as the quirkier engine and driveline approaches. The LeMans remained the superior option for Tempests, Pontiac also offered a higher performance more stripped-down version called the “GTO”. The idea of a smaller platform vehicle with the biggest engine you could fit became a popular option for not only other divisions within GM, but also for Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors.

The El Camino Returns

El Camino

Chevy’s tentative jump into the “sedan/pickup” segment finally stuck with the return of the El Camino in 1964. First available in 1959 as a response to Ford’s Ranchero, it was based on the full-size B-body. After 1960 it was discontinued, while Ford shifted their Ranchero from full-size in 1959 to their new Falcon compact platform in 1960. Strong Ranchero sales in the US prompted Chevy to jump back on the bandwagon with the 1964 El Camino. For its first couple of years, Chevy marketed the El Camino as a light utility truck, and so did not make available any of the performance engines and packages found in Chevelles. Finally adding the 325 hp 396 ci big block option in 1966.
