The El Camino Returns

Chevy's tentative jump into the "sedan/pickup" segment finally stuck with the return of the El Camino in 1964. First available in 1959 as a response to Ford's Ranchero, it was based on the full-size B-body. After 1960 it was discontinued, while Ford shifted their Ranchero from full-size in 1959 to their new Falcon compact platform in 1960. Personalized Luxury was the concept behind the 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and from 1970-'72 they remained similar, featuring only minor trim and detail differences between them. Becoming its Own: A 1978 Chevrolet Malibu

Becoming its own model in 1978, the Chevrolet Malibu began as a trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle. In addition to the nameplate change, the 1978 Malibu model was over a foot shorter, which cut down the vehicle's weight by several hundred pounds.
