OPGI Customer Classic: The ’66 Chevrolet Malibu

Today, we’re excited to spotlight OPGI Customer Alan Nielson and his sweet 1966 Chevelle Malibu. From Factory to Road: The Birth of a ’66 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Manufactured in February 1966 at the Fremont, California GM Plant, Alan’s 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport coupe initially boasted a robust 275 horsepower 327 cu. in. V8 engine paired with a “four-on-the-floor” Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission, representing the core of American Muscle.

Starting the Journey: Restoring with OPGI

Alan started on a restoration journey with OPGI as his trusted companion. The Regal Red exterior, though not its original paint, still gives off the timeless charm of its era. The interior, faithfully refurbished with new TMI black imitation-leather upholstery, retains its nostalgic appeal with black bucket seats and a center console.

Under the Hood: Engine Upgrades and Performance Enhancements

Under the hood, the Chevelle houses a finely tuned powerhouse, featuring optimized performance components like forged piston 10:1 compression, Promaxx Performance “angled-plug” 239 CFM aluminum heads, and a robust mid-range hydraulic flat-tappet Comp Cam camshaft. Complementing the engine is an Edelbrock Performer EPS aluminum intake manifold and a Holley 750 CFM double-pumper carburetor, custom-tailored by Performance Carb & Speed of Ontario, CA. Managing ignition is an MSD 6201 Ignition Controller and MSD Pro-Billet Distributor. Breathing through ceramic-coated headers and a 2-1/2” stainless-steel exhaust system equipped with Pypes Performance X-pipe, Street Pro mufflers, and Vibrant Performance resonators, it delivers an aggressive yet balanced exhaust tone. Cooling is efficiently regulated by a deep-core radiator, dual Maradyne Mach-Two electric fans, and a Davies-Craig digital thermostatic fan controller.

This Chevelle boasts enhanced handling and safety features to complement its impressive power. Upgraded with UMI Performance lowering springs, QA1 Performance shocks, and solid sway bars, it delivers a thrilling driving experience without compromising comfort. The addition of front disc brakes with a dual master cylinder ensures precise control and stopping power, ensuring a safe journey on any road.
